Piece #1 - Gold Star Mew

 Gold Star Mew

You may have noticed that I have decided to showcase pieces instead of cards. This is due

to having a few items that are more memorabilia. The collection does not simply consist of cards but

rather is an amalgamation of varying aspects of collecting. This first piece is one that sums up why I

have the collection that I do.

The Mew Gold Star that currently resides in my collection is there for both it's monetary and

sentimental value. This is a card that I remember vividly and am lucky to have it in a Mint 9 condition.

I've had this card for over half of my life and remember the day that I got it. It was a simple trip to Wal-

Mart with my then stepfather and mom. After a dry run of unsuccessfully begging my mom for cards,

she finally gave in and I was given a tin of 4 packs. The tin in question was likely one of the ones I still

have and use for storage, though I don't know which one exactly.

At the time I was the ripe old age of 10 and although I was not nearly as well versed in Pokémon as I

am today, I did take care of my cards. I will make a separate post going into detail of how I kept my

childhood collection but if I had to sum it up in one word, it would be organized. When I opened the

Mew, my 10 year old self knew two things instantly. 1.) Mew is a legendary and therefore the card

must be good (not always the case) and 2.) There was a strange little gold star after it's name and I

didn't have any other cards like that so it must be special (this is true, lol). After I was done shaking, I

knew that this card needed to be sleeved and put into my binder immediately. I had a special page for

legendary Pokémon and this would become the center piece of that page. That's where it would stay for

over a decade, in my childhood binder inside a sleeve. It wouldn't be until adulthood where I would

place it inside of a top loader and eventually send it in to be graded at PSA, a first and modest 5 card

submission.

This card is by far the most valuable card that I ever pulled from a pack during childhood and I thank

my 10 year old self every day for having the foresight to save and preserve an important symbol of my

 childhood.
